The CLO (Certified Leasing Officer - formerly ALO - Accredited Leasing Officer) designation recognizes the proven specialists in leasehold acquisition, disposal and administration. Their designation attests to their proficiency in every aspect of the leasing process. They are the leasing professionals. CLO members, as with any REIC designated or accredited professional, are governed by the Institute's Code of Professional Conduct.

Interested in becoming a CLO?

When you become a CLO you will be distinguished as a leader in today's competitive market. The CLO is the mark of excellence that will identify you as the skilled specialist that you are.

Step 1: CLO Candidacy

Before you can earn the CLO designation, you need to become a candidate.
All you have to do is:

  • be active in commercial leasing
  • Have at least one year of creditable experience, as defined by REIC
  • be a high school graduate or equivalent
  • complete the candidacy application for and send it to REIC with your application fee.
  • be endorsed by the local REIC Chapter


When you become a candidate you must remain a candidate for a minimum of one year and will have a maximum of five years to meet the requirements for CLO membership.

As a CLO candidate you will be required to complete a series of core and specialty courses.


Step 2: CLO Membership

To achieve the CLO designation, candidates must:

  • Successfully complete the CLO core courses:
    1. REIC 600: Ethics and Business Practice
    2. REIC 260: Real Estate Investment Analysis
    3. Real Estate Law or Business Law
    4. Real Estate Valuation
    5. University/College Elective
  • Successfully complete the CLO specialty courses:
    1. REIC 360: The Leasing Process
    2. REIC 361: Negotiation and Documentation
  • Have three years of creditable experience, as defined by REIC
  • Abide by the REIC Code of Professional Standards
  • have been a candidate for a minimum of one year
  • be affiliated with and endorsed by the local REIC chapter
